Having bigger, more open, and brighter-looking eyes is one of the most desired effects in makeup.
With the right techniques, it is entirely possible to achieve this result naturally—without overdoing it.
How to Make Eyes Look Bigger with Makeup
Making the eyes appear larger is not about adding more product, but about working intelligently with shadows and contrast. The goal is to intensify the gaze, define the eye, and subtly redraw its contour slightly beyond its natural shape to create an optical illusion.
This interplay of light and shadow opens up the eyes and makes them look more expressive.
The Eyelash Curler: The Essential First Step
Before applying any product, I always start with an eyelash curler. It is one of my favorite makeup tools because the effect is immediate and almost universally flattering.
I place the curler at the base of the upper lashes, as close to the lash line as possible, and press firmly for three to four seconds. Then, without releasing it completely, I slightly tilt my hand upward, open the curler just a millimeter, close it again, and repeat this motion two to three times while gradually moving upward.
Within seconds, the eyes appear more open, lifted, and awake.
If this tool feels intimidating, you can refer to my article “How to Use an Eyelash Curler: The Best Tool for Bigger, Brighter Eyes” where I explain each step in detail.
Enhancing the Eyes with Eyeshadow
Eyeshadow is one of the most effective ways to visually alter the size and shape of the eyes.
Creating Definition on the Upper Lid
I usually begin along the upper lash line, applying a shade that is slightly darker than my natural skin tone. This is essential, as it creates the illusion of shadow and structure around the eye.
I blend it upward to create a soft, seamless gradient. The goal is not to see the makeup itself, but to perceive its effect.
I often emphasize the outer corner slightly to lift the eye. Be careful not to drag the shadow downward, as this can create a drooping effect.
Enhancing the Lower Eye Area
I also like to work just below the lower lashes to enhance the enlarging effect. The product is applied directly under the lashes—not between them—to subtly lower the eye line.
This small adjustment makes a noticeable difference in creating the illusion of larger eyes.
Blending: The Key to a Natural Enlarging Effect
Blending is absolutely essential for achieving a natural result.
This technique relies on optical illusion, so the colors must melt seamlessly into the skin without visible edges. The eye then appears more defined and open without obvious makeup lines.
For a flawless blend, I always use a clean brush. This allows me to soften the edges without adding extra product, using small, controlled movements.
The Right Products for a Natural Look
Texture plays an important role in achieving this effect. I particularly like eyeshadows from Dior and Pat McGrath Labs for their rich pigments and blendable textures.
There are also excellent more affordable options from MAC or Kiko, which offer great performance and a wide range of shades.
A simple but highly effective trick for tired eyes is applying a light beige pencil to the lower waterline. This instantly brightens the eyes and enhances the widening effect.
Choosing the Right Colors
Color selection is key to maintaining a natural result.
For a subtle and elegant effect, I recommend neutral tones such as brown, soft brown, or taupe—especially on fair skin. These shades blend seamlessly into the face and create natural depth.
Matte finishes are usually the most effective because they remain discreet and skin-like. Shimmery or metallic textures can also be used, but they create a more sophisticated and visible result.
It’s important to note that light shades alone do not create this enlarging effect, as they lack the depth needed for the optical illusion.
Colored eyeshadows—such as green, blue, or purple—can be used with the same technique, but they will result in a more noticeable, “made-up” look.
Using Eyeliner Pencil to Enhance the Eyes
Eyeliner pencil is another excellent way to intensify the eyes.
I apply it along the upper lash line and blend it upward to avoid harsh lines. Under the eye, I prefer a softer, dotted application to keep the result light and natural, blending it carefully afterward.
For this technique, it is essential to use a pencil with a creamy texture that blends easily. I particularly like the eyeliners from Victoria Beckham and Zoeva, which glide smoothly and then set for long-lasting wear.
The Essential Role of Mascara
Mascara is a key step when aiming to make the eyes look bigger.
After curling the lashes, I apply mascara focusing mainly at the roots to intensify the gaze. On the lengths, I use much less product to avoid weighing the lashes down.
This creates a structured yet lightweight result.
Eyebrows: The Detail That Changes Everything
Eyebrows are often overlooked, but they play a major role in opening up the eyes.
I brush them upward and outward, then set them with a strong-hold gel such as Brow Freeze by Anastasia or Brow Lift by e.l.f.
This simple step creates a subtle lifting effect and instantly makes the eyes appear larger.
Mistakes That Make the Eyes Look Smaller
Some common makeup mistakes can unintentionally make the eyes appear smaller rather than bigger.
One of the most crucial mistakes — and surprisingly widespread — is applying eyeliner only on the lower waterline.
Why is this a problem? Because this dark line visually shifts the definition of the eye inward, making the eyes look more closed and smaller.
(This rule does not apply to a very intense smoky eye, where the color is extended outward and balances the overall effect.)
Another common mistake is skipping blending.
The illusion of larger eyes relies on soft transitions and diffused edges. Harsh, unblended lines break this effect and tend to make the eyes look more closed rather than open.
